Slanted Door Group

The Slanted Door Group, founded by visionary chef Charles Phan, is a renowned culinary establishment celebrated for its innovative approach to Vietnamese cuisine. Since its inception in 1995, the group has been dedicated to elevating traditional dishes by integrating modern design and sustainable, locally sourced ingredients.

The journey began in San Francisco's Mission District, where the original Slanted Door restaurant opened its doors. This establishment quickly gained acclaim for its contemporary take on Vietnamese fare, utilizing organic produce and ethically raised meats from local farms.

The success of the Mission location led to expansions, including a move to the Ferry Building in 2004, and later to locations in Napa, San Ramon, and Beaune, France.

In January 2025, the culinary world mourned the loss of Charles Phan, who passed away at the age of 62 due to cardiac arrest. Phan was instrumental in introducing modern Vietnamese cuisine to the United States and earned accolades such as the James Beard Award for Best Chef: California in 2004.

Following Phan's passing, the Slanted Door Group has continued to honor his legacy. In August 2024, the group announced plans to reopen the original Slanted Door location at 584 Valencia Street in San Francisco's Mission District, aiming for a spring 2025 reopening.
