About Signature Theatre
Signature Theatre, located in New York City, is a renowned nonprofit Off-Broadway theater company dedicated to presenting the works of contemporary playwrights. Founded in 1991 by James Houghton, the theater has become a cornerstone of New York's vibrant arts scene.
Signature Theatre is celebrated for its unique approach to theater production, focusing on a single playwright each season. This Residency One program allows audiences to experience a comprehensive exploration of a playwright's body of work through multiple productions over the course of a year.
Over the years, Signature has featured works by esteemed playwrights such as Edward Albee, August Wilson, Lynn Nottage, and Lauren Yee.
Pershing Square Signature Center
In 2012, Signature Theatre opened the Pershing Square Signature Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. This 72,000-square-foot complex houses three distinct performance spaces:
- The Irene Diamond Stage: A 294-seat theater known for its warm, plywood panels that create an immersive atmosphere.
- The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theater: A 191-seat theater modeled after a European opera house, offering an intimate setting for performances.
- The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theater: A flexible 199- to 250-seat theater that can be configured in various layouts, providing versatility for different productions.
The center also features two rehearsal studios, a café and bar, a bookstore, and a spacious lobby, fostering a collaborative environment for artists and audiences alike.
Accessibility and Programs
