The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the health of all San Franciscans. Operating under the mission to protect and promote public health, SFDPH offers a comprehensive array of services through its three primary divisions: the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, and Behavioral Health.
San Francisco Health Network
The San Francisco Health Network provides direct healthcare services to over 125,000 insured and uninsured residents annually. This network includes:
- Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center: The city's sole provider of trauma and psychiatric emergency services, serving approximately 100,000 patients each year.
- Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center: A comprehensive medical center offering a range of inpatient and outpatient services.
- Over 14 primary care clinics: Located throughout the city, these clinics ensure accessible healthcare for all residents.
Population Health Division
This division addresses core public health services, including:
- Health Protection and Promotion: Implementing programs to prevent disease and promote healthy lifestyles.
- Disease and Injury Prevention: Monitoring and controlling communicable diseases, and promoting safety measures.
- Disaster Preparedness and Response: Preparing for and responding to public health emergencies.
- Environmental Health Services: Ensuring safe air and water quality, and regulating environmental hazards.
Behavioral Health Services
As the largest provider of mental health and substance use prevention, early intervention, and treatment services in the city, this division offers:
- Mental Health Services: Comprehensive care for individuals with mental health needs.
- Substance Use Prevention and Treatment: Programs aimed at preventing and treating substance use disorders.
- Early Intervention Services: Addressing behavioral health issues at the earliest stages to improve outcomes.
SFDPH also manages specialized programs such as Healthy San Francisco, which provides affordable healthcare services to residents who do not qualify for Medi-Cal, including undocumented immigrants.
