About San Antonio Independent School District
The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is a public school district located in San Antonio, Texas. It serves approximately 44,710 students across 98 schools.
Established on May 2, 1899, SAISD encompasses 79 square miles, including Downtown, Midtown, and inner-city areas of San Antonio as well as a small portion of Balcones Heights.
Educational Programs
SAISD offers a diverse range of educational programs tailored to its student population, including dual-language programs, career exploration initiatives, and college-preparation courses.
The district provides specialized academies with non-traditional grade ranges such as Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. It is also home to the city's only public Montessori school, single-gender campuses, and a K-12 International Baccalaureate framework.
In recent years, SAISD developed five P-TECH programs to enhance career and technical education.
Extracurricular Activities
Beyond academics, SAISD emphasizes extracurriculars by offering extensive athletics and fine arts programs. A notable highlight is the district's mariachi curriculum, first pioneered within SAISD before gaining nationwide adoption.
Community Initiatives and Funding
In response to declining enrollment, SAISD has repurposed closed school buildings into community hubs to mitigate neighborhood impact.
The district has also received federal funding aimed at enhancing college and career readiness programs to better align coursework with future careers.
