Ocean Peace: A Leader in Sustainable Alaskan Whitefish Harvesting

Ocean Peace, Inc. is a Seattle-based company specializing in the harvesting, processing, and freezing-at-sea of premium wild-caught Alaskan whitefish. Established in December 1990, the company operates a fleet of catcher/processor vessels fishing in the North Pacific Ocean, particularly in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands.

Fleet of Catcher/Processor Vessels

The company’s fleet includes notable vessels that have undergone major upgrades and renovations to improve capacity and processing capabilities:

  • F/V Ocean Peace: Originally built in 1984 as the AMFISH, retrofitted in 1991 for North Pacific operations, completely rebuilt in 2007, and widened in 2014 for enhanced stability and capacity.
  • F/V Seafisher: Built in 1976, converted to catcher/processor in 1990, and renovated in 2012 to improve processing and crew amenities.
  • F/V Alaska Victory and F/V Alaska Warrior: Purchased in 2017, these former oil-field supply vessels were converted and renovated to enhance processing and crew facilities.
  • C/V Green Hope and C/V Bering Hope: Support vessels that catch fish for factory trawlers. Green Hope was built in 1979 and refurbished in 2014; Bering Hope was purchased in 2019 and converted into a catcher vessel.

Fish Species and Quality

Ocean Peace focuses on harvesting a variety of Alaskan whitefish species, including Atka mackerel, Pacific ocean perch, Pacific cod, yellowfin sole, rock sole, and flathead sole. The fish are noted for their high quality, harvested from Alaska’s cold, clear waters and processed onboard to ensure freshness.

Commitment to Sustainability

The company is committed to sustainable fishing practices and is a member of the Groundfish Forum and Alaska Seafood Cooperative. These organizations collaborate with the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to develop regulations ensuring the long-term sustainability of harvested species.

Certifications include the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Alaska Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Programs, which have certified the flatfish, cod, and pollock caught by the Amendment 80 vessels as long-term sustainable.
