About New York Power Authority

New York Power Authority (NYPA) is the largest state public power organization in the United States, operating 17 generating facilities and over 1,550 circuit-miles of transmission lines.

Established in 1931, NYPA is a public-benefit corporation owned by the State of New York, providing affordable, clean, and reliable electricity to a diverse customer base. This includes large and small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, public power systems, and government agencies.

Power Generation Portfolio

NYPA's power generation portfolio is diverse, encompassing hydroelectric, pumped-storage hydroelectric, open and combined cycle gas turbine, and battery electric storage power plants.

Approximately 70% of the electricity produced comes from clean, renewable hydropower. The authority is also exploring the development of solar photovoltaic plants and a new nuclear power plant to further diversify its energy mix.

Renewable Energy Expansion

In 2023, NYPA was granted expanded authority by New York State lawmakers to pursue renewable generation projects such as solar, wind, geothermal, and battery storage. These projects are undertaken independently or in partnership with third parties.

This expansion aligns with the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goals, aiming for a carbon-free, economically vibrant New York.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

To support the state's renewable energy objectives, NYPA has been instrumental in initiatives like Charge NY and EVolve NY.

  • Charge NY has facilitated the installation of over a hundred charging stations and sponsored technology research.
  • EVolve NY has committed up to $250 million through 2025 to invest in electric vehicle infrastructure, services, and consumer awareness efforts.
  • The goal is to expand fast, affordable, and convenient DC Fast Charging across New York State.

Digital Transformation

NYPA has partnered with General Electric (GE) to become the world's first fully digital utility. This collaboration optimizes the entire electricity value network, from generation to consumption.

The partnership aims to enhance reliability, affordability, and reduce the carbon footprint of energy delivery.

Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory

NYPA demonstrates its commitment to innovation through the Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory for Energy (AGILe), a world-class power systems laboratory and testing facility.

Inaugurated in 2017 and expanded in 2022, AGILe supports New York State’s climate goals by performing modeling and testing services essential for understanding technologies defining the modernized grid.

Locations

NYPA’s main administrative offices are located in White Plains, New York. It also operates several key facilities throughout the state, including:

  • New Rochelle, NY, USA
  • Lewiston, NY
  • Massena, NY
  • Albany, NY
  • Utica, NY

These locations enable NYPA to provide reliable and affordable electricity to New Yorkers effectively.

Role and Commitment

The New York Power Authority plays a pivotal role in shaping the state's energy landscape through its diverse energy portfolio, commitment to renewable energy, and innovative initiatives.

It ensures a sustainable and reliable power supply for residents and businesses, advancing New York’s energy future.
