About MUSC
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a comprehensive academic health system based in Charleston, South Carolina. Established in 1824, it is one of the nation's oldest continually operating medical institutions.
MUSC includes a public medical school, a medical center, and six colleges dedicated to educating health professionals, biomedical scientists, and healthcare personnel. It also serves as a hub for research and operates a public hospital.
Medical Services and Facilities
MUSC Health, the university's clinical arm, offers a wide array of medical services including primary care, specialty care, and surgical procedures. These cover fields such as cardiology, oncology, and pediatrics.
Patient care is delivered at 16 hospitals with approximately 2,700 beds, plus four additional hospital locations are in development. The system includes more than 350 telehealth sites and nearly 750 care locations across South Carolina.
In 2023, MUSC Health University Medical Center in Charleston was recognized as the No. 1 hospital in South Carolina for the ninth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report.
Specialized Facilities
MUSC Health operates specialized facilities such as the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. This nationally ranked, freestanding acute care women's and children's hospital in Charleston has all private rooms, including 250 pediatric beds and 29 beds for women.
The hospital provides comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to infants, children, teens, and young adults aged 0–21 throughout the Carolinas.
