Lutheran Social Services of New York

Lutheran Social Services of New York (LSSNY) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming communities. It collaborates with individuals, families, and leaders to address the causes and effects of persistent poverty and social injustice. With over 125 years of service, LSSNY offers a comprehensive range of programs aimed at strengthening lives, families, and communities across New York City.

Community Services

LSSNY partners with over 400 Lutheran congregations to meet local needs through the Congregation LIFE program. The Healthy LIFE initiative focuses on hunger prevention by operating food pantries and related services.

The LIFE Shield program provides legal and integrative services for immigrants and refugees, including unaccompanied youth minors. Additionally, Lutheran Disaster Response of New York offers disaster case management for individuals and communities impacted by events like Superstorm Sandy.

Residential Services

The organization offers affordable housing and support services for vulnerable populations such as individuals with substance abuse issues, mental illness, and low incomes. The Home LIFE program provides housing and social services for adolescent youth in the criminal justice system.

Child and Family Services

The Early LIFE program offers preschool care and early educational services in ten centers and family homes, promoting learning, development, and educational readiness. The New LIFE School is a 12-month day school for special-needs students in grades 3 through 12.

Immigration Legal Services

LSSNY provides free or low-cost immigration assistance to underserved populations in the New York City metropolitan area. Services include help with asylum applications, family-based petitions, naturalization, and representation in removal hearings.

The organization serves individuals who are not in legal immigration status, those with criminal histories, and victims of crime, among others.
