About Lawton Family of Restaurants
The Lawton Family of Restaurants is a renowned, family-owned establishment in San Antonio, Texas, celebrated for its warm hospitality, excellent service, and exceptional regional cuisine. Since 1973, the Lawton family has been a cornerstone of San Antonio's dining scene, operating five beloved restaurants that cater to a diverse range of culinary preferences.
The Restaurants
Cappy’s Restaurant, established in 1977, is the flagship of the Lawton family. This upscale yet casual dining spot offers a menu featuring seafood, steaks, and innovative American and regional dishes. Guests can enjoy an extensive wine list, craft cocktails, and over 40 varieties of scotch and bourbon. Cappy’s brunch is consistently ranked among the top 100 in the country.
In 1997, the Lawtons acquired La Fonda on Main, San Antonio’s oldest Mexican restaurant, which has been serving patrons since 1932. The restaurant specializes in interior Mexican cuisine, complemented by select Tex-Mex offerings. Diners can relax in the hacienda-style dining room or enjoy the lush patio, which is heated during winter months. A variety of margaritas enhance the dining experience.
Adjacent to Cappy’s, Cappyccino’s serves as the casual sister restaurant. This "bistro bistro" offers wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and delightful desserts. The bar features creative handcrafted cocktails, rotating local draft beers, and whiskey tasting flights. Guests are invited to seat themselves and enjoy a relaxed dining atmosphere.
In 2021, the Lawton family revitalized Mama’s Café, a beloved establishment originally operated by Cappy Lawton until 1988. The restaurant reopened with an upgraded look, new kitchen, and beautiful patio/beer garden. Mama’s Café offers elevated comfort foods made from scratch, with many gluten-free options to accommodate different dietary needs.
The newest addition to the family is Jingu House, located in the historic Japanese Tea Garden. This establishment offers Japanese cuisine, cocktails, and tea with a San Antonio twist. Proceeds from Jingu House contribute to garden improvements, and the venue hosts free concerts and private events, adding to the cultural richness of the community.
Commitment to San Antonio
The Lawton family’s dedication to the San Antonio community is evident through their commitment to quality, innovation, and cultural appreciation. Their restaurants provide exceptional dining experiences and contribute to the city’s rich culinary heritage.
