About Kentucky Derby Museum

Kentucky Derby Museum Overview

The Kentucky Derby Museum is located adjacent to the historic Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. It is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history and traditions of the Kentucky Derby.

Established in 1985, the museum has welcomed over 7.2 million visitors, offering an immersive experience into the world of Thoroughbred horse racing.

Exhibits and Collections

Spanning two floors, the museum features a diverse collection of over 20,000 artifacts. These include race footage dating back to 1918, trophies, commemorative Derby glasses, riding silks, and a live Thoroughbred and miniature horse.

Visitors can test their Derby knowledge in an interactive trivia game and attempt to maintain a jockey’s stance for 2 minutes on a mountable simulated horse.

A highlight of the museum is the 360-degree high-definition film, "The Greatest Race," which narrates the life of a Thoroughbred, from foal to Derby champion. This immersive experience allows guests to feel the excitement and energy of the Derby firsthand.

Specialty Tours

The museum offers several specialty tours providing behind-the-scenes access to areas typically closed to the public.

  • The Barn and Backside Tour allows guests to witness Thoroughbreds working out on the track in the early morning light and explore the vibrant culture of the backside, including interactions with grooms, exercise riders, hot walkers, and trainers.
  • The Bourbon & Bridles Experience combines a tour of Churchill Downs with a bourbon tasting and an interactive lesson on making the signature Mint Julep.

Dining and Bourbon Experience

The museum features the Derby Café & Bourbon Bar, offering a selection of over 170 bourbons and Kentucky fare. As an official stop on Louisville’s Urban Bourbon Trail, guests can enjoy a bourbon tasting and have their Urban Bourbon Trail Passport stamped.
