Howard County Government

The Howard County Government is the administrative body responsible for overseeing the operations and services within Howard County, Maryland. Established in 1838, the county encompasses a diverse range of communities, including the planned city of Columbia, founded in 1967.

Government Structure and Services

The county operates under a charter form of government, with the County Executive serving as the chief executive officer and the County Council acting as the legislative branch. The County Council consists of five members, each representing a specific district within the county.

These council members are responsible for enacting laws, approving budgets, and addressing constituent concerns.

Leadership

As of July 2025, the County Executive is Calvin B. Ball III, who has held office since December 3, 2018. He is the first African-American to hold this position in Howard County.
