About HOUSTON AIRPORT SYSTEM

The Houston Airport System (HAS) is a municipal department of the City of Houston, Texas, responsible for the operation and management of the city's three major public airports: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), and Ellington Airport (EFD). These airports collectively serve as vital transportation hubs, facilitating both domestic and international travel, and contributing significantly to the region's economy and connectivity.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

Located approximately 23 miles north of downtown Houston, IAH is the city's primary international gateway. Opened in 1969 and renamed in honor of President George H. W. Bush in 1997, the airport spans over 11,000 acres and features five terminals and five runways.

In 2024, IAH served over 48 million passengers, including 10 million international travelers, making it the second busiest airport in Texas for international passenger traffic.

William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)

Established in 1927 and named after former Texas Governor William P. Hobby in 1967, HOU is Houston's oldest commercial airport. It primarily serves domestic flights and is a major hub for Southwest Airlines.

In 2015, Hobby Airport expanded its international services with the opening of a new terminal, enabling flights to Mexico and Central and South America. The airport covers 1,304 acres and has three runways.

Ellington Airport (EFD)

Formerly Ellington Air Force Base, EFD became part of the Houston Airport System in 1984. It serves as a reliever airport for IAH and HOU, handling diverted aircraft during adverse weather and peak traffic periods.

EFD is also home to the Houston Spaceport, a commercial spaceport established in 2015, which supports aerospace and aviation industries.

Services and Amenities

The Houston Airport System is committed to enhancing passenger experience through various services and amenities:

  • Free Wi-Fi is available at both IAH and HOU, responding to modern travelers' expectations for connectivity.
  • Art and Culture: IAH boasts one of the largest collections of public art in Texas, complemented by the "Harmony in the Air" performing arts program, creating a stress-free and enjoyable atmosphere.
  • Cultural Facilities: In 2024, IAH introduced an ablution room and a prayer room in Terminal D, catering to international travelers and demonstrating the airport's commitment to "Houston friendly" hospitality.
  • Innovative Services: HOU has implemented a library vending machine, "Booklink," in partnership with the Houston Public Library, allowing travelers to borrow physical books, e-books, and audiobooks.

Recent Developments

In October 2024, IAH completed a $1.5 billion expansion of Terminal D, adding 160,000 square feet to accommodate increasing passenger and airline demand.

The expansion includes new amenities such as art installations and diverse dining options, reinforcing the airport's global aviation status.
