About Hawaii State Department of Education
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) is the sole public education system in Hawaiʻi, overseeing all K-12 public schools and charter schools across the state. Established in 1840 by King Kamehameha III, it is the oldest public education system west of the Mississippi River.
HIDOE serves approximately 167,649 students statewide, supported by a dedicated team of over 13,000 teachers. The department is headquartered in the Queen Liliuokalani Building in Honolulu, Oʻahu.
The department's mission is to prepare students to be "Globally Competitive, Locally Committed," ensuring they possess the academic knowledge and skills to thrive while fostering responsibility to contribute to their communities.
Curriculum and Programs
HIDOE offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes specialized programs such as:

The Office of Hawaiian Education, established in 2015, oversees the Hawaiian Studies Program and the Ka Papahana Kaiapuni Hawaiʻi Hawaiian Language Immersion Program. This reflects the state's commitment to preserving and promoting its native language and culture.
Inclusive Education
The department emphasizes inclusive education, ensuring all students, including those with disabilities, have access to rigorous and effective instruction.
Through the Hui Pu Project, HIDOE supports schools in rethinking program design to provide equitable learning opportunities for all students.
Transportation Services
Transportation services are provided to students across the islands, serving about 25,000 student riders. This ensures broad access to educational opportunities throughout Hawaiʻi.
