About Hawaii State Department of Education

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) is the sole public education system in Hawaiʻi, overseeing all K-12 public schools and charter schools across the state. Established in 1840 by King Kamehameha III, it is the oldest public education system west of the Mississippi River.

HIDOE serves approximately 167,649 students statewide, supported by a dedicated team of over 13,000 teachers. The department is headquartered in the Queen Liliuokalani Building in Honolulu, Oʻahu.
