HANAC, Inc., originally founded in 1972 as the Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee by George Douris, is a New York City-based multi-faceted social services organization. Its mission is to develop, implement, and administer essential social services aimed at enhancing the community's well-being.
The organization focuses on youth, senior, and immigrant services, employment and education programs, counseling, and affordable housing initiatives.
Programs and Services
HANAC sponsors over 40 programs across twelve sites in four boroughs, serving more than 30,000 clients annually. These services address the diverse needs of New York City's residents, particularly vulnerable populations.
Youth Services include after-school programs in schools and housing developments, catering to elementary through high school students. These provide homework assistance, tutoring, arts and crafts, sports, and curriculum-based activities. Additionally, literacy programs and job training and placement services are available.
Senior Services operate through senior centers offering activities for citizens aged 60 and above to remain active. These centers host social activities, educational opportunities, referrals for social services, and daily luncheon programs, with a strong emphasis on services to the frail elderly funded through the New York City Department for the Aging.
Immigrant Services are provided via a Legal Immigration Program that educates immigrants about their rights and helps with processes such as permanent residency, DACA renewals, work permits, asylum, and citizenship. The program features qualified paralegals, case workers, and a staff attorney bilingual in English, Greek, and Spanish.
Affordable Housing projects aim to provide quality housing options to low-income families. HANAC collaborates with city agencies, developers, and architects to develop and manage these housing units.
Employment and Education Programs offer job readiness counseling, placement services, and educational workshops designed to equip individuals with skills needed to secure employment and advance careers.
Commitment to Community Development
HANAC's commitment is evident through its diverse services fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for New York City's residents.
