Established in 1981 as Flying Foods International, the company initially served as an importer and distributor, supplying essential ingredients to top restaurants and chefs across New York and other major cities.

In 1992, Gourmet Garage transitioned into retail by opening its first store in SoHo, Manhattan.

This move allowed the company to bring restaurant-quality ingredients directly to consumers, embodying the philosophy of "shopping like a chef".

The store offered a diverse range of products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, marbled meats, and a variety of groceries.

Over the years, Gourmet Garage expanded its presence in Manhattan, establishing additional locations in Tribeca, the Upper West Side, and the West Village.

In 2019, Gourmet Garage was acquired by Village Super Market, a member of the Wakefern Food Corporation cooperative.
