About Fort Bend Independent School District
Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD), established in 1959, is a prominent public school district located in Fort Bend County, Texas. It serves a diverse community spanning approximately 170 square miles. The district includes the city of Sugar Land, parts of Houston, Missouri City, and several unincorporated communities.
Schools and Student Population
As of the 2023–2024 academic year, FBISD operates 86 schools, consisting of 56 elementary schools, 16 middle schools, and 13 high schools. Together, these schools educate over 80,000 students.
This size makes FBISD the seventh-largest public school system in Texas and the third-largest in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Area.
Diversity and Socioeconomic Profile
The district is recognized for its commitment to academic excellence and diversity. It ranks as the fifth most diverse school district in Texas, with a minority enrollment of 90%.
Additionally, 41.2% of its students are economically disadvantaged, underscoring the district's dedication to serving all sectors of its community.
Academic Programs and Magnet Schools
FBISD offers a comprehensive curriculum including standard academic programs, specialized academies, and extracurricular activities. Several magnet programs create small learning communities focused on specific careers.
These academies are located at various schools and require an application for admission. Importantly, transportation is provided for academy students regardless of their zoned schools.
Facilities and Bond Initiatives
In 2023, FBISD proposed a $1.26 billion bond to rebuild aging schools, construct new campuses, and address critical infrastructure across its 82 campuses.
If approved, the bond would include a $222 million allocation specifically to rebuild Clements High School, exemplifying the district's focus on modernizing its facilities.
Notable Schools and Community Engagement
The district established Malala Yousafzai Elementary School in 2020, named after the Nobel laureate and education activist. This is reportedly the only school in the United States named after Malala, highlighting FBISD's commitment to promoting global awareness and education.
Furthermore, FBISD fosters a positive and inclusive learning environment. In response to recent book bans and student privacy concerns, a student group launched a book club to resist censorship and encourage intellectual freedom.
