About FOODSHED
Foodshed is a farmer-owned and operated cooperative dedicated to cultivating an equitable food system in San Diego, California. Established in March 2020, the organization focuses on increasing access to healthy food, addressing food insecurity in low-income communities, and empowering small farms to produce quality harvests.
The cooperative works directly with farmers, eaters, and entrepreneurs to connect small and urban regenerative farms with communities that need it most. By aggregating local produce from over 50 farms, the cooperative distributes approximately 700 reduced-cost and retail fruit and vegetable boxes to neighborhoods across San Diego.
Foodshed operates on a model where 80% of each "food dollar" goes directly to the farmer, 5% is allocated towards regenerative agriculture research and project implementation, and any remaining profit is paid back to farmers through profit sharing at the end of each year.
Operations and Expansion
In addition to its main operations in San Diego, Foodshed has expanded its reach to other regions. Foodshed.io, a related entity, is an agricultural technology company that partners with restaurants, universities, and grocery store retailers to source local produce and other food products.
Founded in 2016, Foodshed.io operates in the Midwestern United States and has been instrumental in connecting local farmers with wholesale markets.
Impact and Mission
Through its innovative approach, Foodshed is not only providing access to fresh, locally sourced produce but also fostering a more sustainable and equitable food system.
