Families in Transition

Families in Transition (FIT) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and breaking the cycle of homelessness in New Hampshire. Established in 1991, FIT offers a comprehensive range of services designed to empower individuals and families facing homelessness.

The goal is to help them achieve self-sufficiency and respect.

Housing Programs

FIT operates 22 properties across southern New Hampshire, providing housing and emergency shelter for nearly 600 individuals and families each night.

Their housing options include:

• Affordable Housing: Long-term assistance for individuals and families meeting income requirements.
• Permanent Supportive Housing: Independent units with case management to help residents maintain stability and reach personal goals.
• Transitional Supportive Housing: Temporary housing with case management lasting 18–24 months to support transition to permanent housing.
• Recovery Housing: Substance-free environments with peer support and services for those overcoming substance use challenges.

Emergency Shelters

FIT operates two emergency shelters in Manchester, NH:

• Adult Shelter: Serving 138 individuals nightly, providing a safe environment for adults experiencing homelessness.
• Family Shelter: Accommodating 11 families each night, offering secure shelter for families with children facing homelessness.

Food Services

Proper nutrition is vital for those experiencing homelessness. FIT runs the largest food pantry in Manchester, NH, serving about 1,000 households monthly.

The pantry offers essential items including fresh produce, dairy, and non-perishable goods to ensure access to nutritious food.

Substance Use Treatment

The Willows Treatment Center, part of FIT, specializes in evidence-based practices for substance use disorders, mental health, and trauma.

Services include outpatient and intensive outpatient programs focusing on wellness and recovery. FIT also provides recovery housing for women reuniting with their children, supporting sobriety and family reunification.

Outfitters Thrift Store

The Outfitters Thrift Store generates vital revenue for FIT's mission. It provides clothing and household items to program participants to aid their transition to stable housing.

The store offers a wide selection of items such as furniture, clothing, electronics, and seasonal decorations.
