Douglas County School District - Colorado

Douglas County School District (DCSD) is Colorado's third-largest school district, serving over 63,000 students from preschool through twelfth grade across 850 square miles.

Established in 1958 through the consolidation of 17 smaller districts, DCSD encompasses all of Douglas County and parts of Elbert County.

Schools and Programs

The district includes 92 public schools featuring traditional, charter, magnet, and alternative education campuses. Educational offerings are diverse, such as International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement, STEM, Artful Learning, and Project-Based Learning programs.

DCSD provides concurrent enrollment opportunities, allowing high school students to earn college credits, saving local families over $10 million in tuition last year.

Douglas County boasts a graduation rate of 92%, one of the highest in the Denver metro area. The Class of 2025 earned scholarships totaling more than $104 million.

The district employs approximately 7,400 staff members, including 3,600 licensed employees, making it the largest employer in the county.

Challenges

In recent years, DCSD has faced challenges including a federal investigation into its handling of discrimination, harassment, and bullying incidents. Issues related to the use of seclusion and restraint practices with students with disabilities have also arisen.

The district has been involved in political debates over educational policies, such as school reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic and mask mandate changes.
