Established to ensure that veterans receive the benefits and services they have earned, DVS offers a comprehensive range of programs and assistance across the Commonwealth.

Benefits Assistance

DVS provides free assistance to veterans and their families in obtaining state, federal, and local benefits. This includes support in preparing, presenting, and prosecuting claims, as well as serving as a clearinghouse for information that enhances the veteran's quality of life.

The department offers support for mental health and substance use disorders, ensuring veterans have access to necessary care. Additionally, DVS operates veteran skilled nursing facilities, known as State Veterans Homes, providing long-term care for veterans.

These facilities are located in various cities, including Roanoke, Richmond, and Virginia Beach.

Education and Employment

DVS supports veterans in their educational pursuits through programs like the Military Education and Workforce Initiative (MEWI) and the Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP).

For employment, the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Program assists veterans in transitioning to civilian careers, while the Military Medics & Corpsmen (MMAC) Program helps veterans with medical backgrounds find employment in the healthcare sector.

The department manages several state veteran cemeteries, including the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, and the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.

These cemeteries provide dignified resting places for veterans and their families.
