Concordia College Alabama was a private, historically Black college located in Selma, Alabama. Established in 1922 by the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, it was the only historically Black college within the Concordia University System.
The college aimed to provide higher education opportunities to African American students, especially those pursuing careers in church work.
Academic Programs and Accreditation
Concordia College Alabama offered a range of undergraduate programs, emphasizing early childhood and elementary education.
The institution was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, allowing it to grant bachelor's degrees.
Athletics and Campus Life
The college's athletic teams, known as the Hornets, competed in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
Men's sports included baseball, basketball, and soccer, while women's sports covered basketball, softball, track & field, and volleyball.
The Magnificent Marching Hornet Band was noted for its skilled choreography and unique uniforms, contributing to vibrant campus life.
Closure and Legacy
Despite its rich history and contributions, Concordia College Alabama faced significant financial challenges later on.
Declining enrollment and financial difficulties led to closing the institution after the spring 2018 semester. The final graduation was on April 28, 2018, ending a 95-year legacy.
After closure, the campus and assets were sold. The property was purchased by Dr. Paul J. Kim, who planned to create a mission retreat center and contemporary music university on the site.
Today, Concordia College Alabama no longer operates, but its legacy lives on through alumni and community impact.
