Community Action of South Mississippi (CASOMS) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to enhancing the well-being and self-sufficiency of individuals and families across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Established in 1964, CASOMS has been at the forefront of addressing the root causes of poverty and providing essential services that empower the community.

Head Start and Early Head Start Programs

CASOMS offers comprehensive early childhood education through its Head Start and Early Head Start programs. These initiatives provide children from birth through age five with quality education, healthy meals, and health screenings, including services for children with special needs.

Childcare and Afterschool Services

For working families, CASOMS operates the First Step Childcare Program, serving children ages 2-5 from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Additionally, the organization offers an Afterschool Program for children ages 5-12, running from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. These programs provide a safe and nurturing environment, promoting educational and social development.

Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)

CASOMS administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) across George, Harrison, and Jackson Counties.

This program assists low-income households in managing their immediate home energy needs, ensuring families remain safe and healthy during extreme weather conditions.

Services include help with energy bills, energy crises, weatherization, and minor home repairs related to energy efficiency.

Senior Services

To support the aging community, CASOMS provides senior services that include transportation, congregate meals, and various activities.

Senior Centers in Moss Point and Ocean Springs offer a range of daily activities, such as games, exercise sessions, and social events, fostering a sense of community and well-being among seniors.

Food Pantry

CASOMS operates a Food Pantry to assist residents of Jackson and George Counties. The pantry provides groceries and basic necessities to families in need.

In 2023, 2,657 individuals benefited from this service.

  • Community Services Block Grant (CSBG): Provides practical support for families facing challenges, including assistance with housing, utilities, and achieving stability.
  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): Offers free tax preparation by trained volunteers, ensuring accurate filing and timely refunds.
  • Weatherization Assistance: Provides referrals for weatherization services to improve energy efficiency in homes, benefiting income-eligible residents.
