About Colonial Williamsburg Company

Colonial Williamsburg is a living-history museum and private foundation dedicated to preserving and interpreting the 18th-century capital of Virginia. Spanning 301 acres, the Historic Area features over 500 restored or recreated buildings, including 89 original structures. These buildings transport visitors back to the time of America's founding.

Visitors can explore the Historic Area's main thoroughfare, Duke of Gloucester Street, and its connecting side streets. These streets are designed to represent how Williamsburg existed in the 18th century. Costumed employees work and dress as people did during the colonial era, sometimes using colonial grammar and diction.

The museum offers a variety of experiences, including guided tours, interactive exhibits, and live demonstrations of trades such as:

  • Blacksmithing
  • Carpentry
  • Weaving

Visitors can also enjoy period-appropriate dining at historic taverns and shop for 18th-century-inspired goods at various stores.

In addition to the Historic Area, Colonial Williamsburg operates two world-class art museums:

  • The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum
  • The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum

These institutions house extensive collections of American and British antiques, decorative arts, and folk art from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a private, not-for-profit educational institution that receives no regular state or federal funding. The Foundation conducts ongoing historical, architectural, and archaeological research that underpins all exhibitions and programs in the Historic Area, in the Art Museums, and online.
