Children's Institute, Inc.

Children's Institute, Inc. (CII) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and families in Los Angeles County, particularly those affected by trauma, abuse, and adversity. Established in 1906 by Minnie Barton, Los Angeles's first female probation officer, CII has evolved from its original mission to assist young women into a comprehensive service provider for at-risk youth and families.

CII offers a wide array of programs and services designed to address the diverse needs of children and families, including:

• Behavioral Health & Wellness: A leader in trauma-informed care providing counseling services to children, adolescents, transition-aged youth, and parents. Evidence-based practices include Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Child-Parent Psychotherapy.
• Early Childhood Education: Early education programs that foster emotional well-being, language and literacy, and healthy development, preparing children for lifelong learning and empowering parents to be active participants in their child's education.
• Strengthening Families: Services for children and families involved in child welfare and juvenile justice systems. These promote protective factors, stable environments, support networks, improved parenting skills, and preparation for higher education and employment.
• Community Innovations: Programs in partnership with parents, schools, and community organizations in South Los Angeles that raise awareness about trauma's impact on children. Offers training, resources, and advocacy to increase community resilience and reduce trauma.
• Community Schools: Collaboration with schools and preschools to provide comprehensive trauma-informed services including after-school and enrichment activities, parent workshops, and family resource centers.
• Project Fatherhood: Provides parenting skills to men in caregiving roles using an innovative support group model, encouraging fathers to be loving, responsible parents and active in their children's lives.
• Community Health: Supports educational success and emotional well-being while coordinating physical and mental health care services through programs like Enhanced Care Management, United Mental Health Promoters, Public Health Teams, and REACH Team for children exposed to violence.
