Cheverus High School Overview
Cheverus High School, located at 267 Ocean Avenue in Portland, Maine, is a private, co-educational, Jesuit Catholic college-preparatory institution serving students in grades 9 through 12. Established in 1917, the school has a rich history of providing a rigorous academic curriculum rooted in Jesuit traditions.
Academic Excellence
Cheverus offers a comprehensive college-preparatory program, including honors courses and 16 Advanced Placement subjects. The curriculum emphasizes intellectual, spiritual, physical, and personal development. This prepares students for post-secondary education and life beyond.
Nearly 100% of graduates pursue higher education, with recent acceptances to prestigious institutions such as Bates College, Boston College, Bowdoin College, Brown University, Colby College, Columbia University, Cornell University, Fordham University, Georgetown University, College of the Holy Cross, Harvard University, Middlebury College, New York University, and many others.
Spiritual and Community Engagement
Rooted in Jesuit Catholic traditions, Cheverus fosters a strong sense of faith and justice among students, faculty, and staff. The Campus Ministry program along with a four-year theology curriculum encourages students to recognize and respond to the call of God in their lives.
Students participate in spiritual retreats, support liturgies, and engage in regular acts of service to others in need. The program empowers ongoing faith formation and a commitment to prayer, reflection, and service.
Extracurricular Activities
Cheverus provides a vibrant array of extracurricular activities, including over 20 student organizations. These include concert band, math team, outing club, French club, robotics, campus ministry, and Model United Nations.
The school's athletic program features more than 45 varsity, junior varsity, and intramural sports teams, most competing at the Class A or AA level. Community service remains a cornerstone of the Cheverus experience; all students perform community service annually, with many exploring social justice through optional immersion trips.
Recent Developments
In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Maine could no longer exclude religious schools from its tuition reimbursement program. Cheverus was the only religious school to apply and was approved, allowing students to use state funds for their religious education.
Campus Facilities
The Cheverus campus includes two main buildings:
- Main Building – Most math and science classes are taught here.
- Loyola Hall – Named after Saint Ignatius of Loyola; English, history, theology, and fine arts classes are held here.
Sports facilities are housed in the Rev. John Keegan Gymnasium, which connects to the Main Building. The campus also features Boulos Stadium and Shea Field.
