About Broward County Public Schools
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is the sixth-largest public school system in the United States and the second-largest in Florida. It serves over 247,500 students and approximately 125,000 adult learners. BCPS operates 239 schools, centers, technical colleges, and 88 charter schools.
The district is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with additional locations in Davie and Plantation.
History and Diversity
Established in 1915, BCPS is Florida's first fully accredited school system, maintaining that status since 1962. The district supports a diverse student population representing 175 different countries and speaking 156 languages.
Student Population and Schools
During the 2023–2024 school year, BCPS served 251,106 students across 326 institutions. These include 137 elementary schools, 35 middle schools, 32 high schools, 9 combination schools, 3 technical colleges, 23 centers, and 87 charter schools.

BCPS has earned an "A" rating for the second consecutive year, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence.
Safety and Student Well-being
The district is known for its proactive approach to student safety. To address concerns about distractions and mental health, BCPS implemented a cellphone ban during school hours, including lunch periods.
Meal Program Adaptations
In response to state and federal budget cuts, BCPS has made changes to its meal programs. The district discontinued universal free lunch programs for the 2025–2026 school year and reinstated an application-based process.
Free meals continue to be provided to eligible students through the Community Eligibility Program.
