About Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a not-for-profit organization that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Brooklyn Navy Yard on behalf of the City of New York. Established in 1982, BNYDC's mission is to fuel New York City's economic vitality by creating and preserving quality jobs, growing the city's modern industrial sector, and connecting the local community with the economic opportunities and resources of the Yard.
The Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre waterfront site, was once the nation's most storied naval shipbuilding facility, building and launching America's most famous fighting ships, including the USS Maine, USS Arizona, and USS Missouri. Today, it is home to over 550 businesses employing more than 13,000 people and generating over $2.5 billion annually in economic impact for the city.
BNYDC's vision is to create a vibrant and dense, modern manufacturing community where businesses are provided the stability needed to invest, grow, and thrive. To achieve this, BNYDC focuses on several key strategies:
- Real Estate Development and Management: BNYDC builds and maintains the real estate and physical infrastructure required for modern, urban industrial business activity, including bringing additional space online through rehabilitation, subdivision, and new development.
- Business Support Services: BNYDC offers programs, events, and resources designed to help Yard businesses expand sales, grow and scale, and increase success, including resource and referral services, community collaboration, and education programs for small business owners.
- Workforce Development: BNYDC connects local residents to economic opportunities through initiatives like the Albert C. Wiltshire Employment Center, providing hiring and staffing support services at no cost, resulting in over 450 hires annually.
- Community Engagement: BNYDC provides programs focused on linking the Yard with local communities, such as Yard tours, educational opportunities for schools, and afterschool programs for teens, positioning the Yard as a social and cultural hub.
In addition to these initiatives, BNYDC is actively involved in sustainable development efforts. For example, in response to the climate crisis, BNYDC issued a Request for Expressions of Interest for development and operation of a 2.75-acre parcel on the Brooklyn waterfront dedicated to clean energy infrastructure or climate change technology production.
BNYDC's commitment to innovation and community engagement is demonstrated by the creation of the Industry Development Council, comprised of over 20 leaders who help advance key industries at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. These include:
- MedTech
- Robotics
- Sustainable Design-Build
- Innovative Fashion/Wearables
- M/WBE Beauty/Personal Care
- Life Science
- Green/Clean Energy
