BREC Recreation And Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge

The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge, commonly known as BREC, is a dynamic agency dedicated to connecting the community of East Baton Rouge Parish with a diverse array of parks and recreational facilities.

Established in 1946, BREC has grown to encompass over 180 parks, offering a unique blend of amenities that reflect the rich history and natural resources of the region.

Facilities and Attractions

Among its extensive offerings, BREC features a state-of-the-art observatory, the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, and an equestrian park.

The commission also manages an accredited zoo, performing arts theaters, arboretums, botanical gardens, and a water park equipped with the only surfing simulator in the state.

Additionally, BREC operates seven golf courses and an expansive 30,000-square-foot extreme sports park, which includes a concrete skate park, rock-climbing wall, BMX track, and velodrome.

BREC's mission is to enhance well-being and connectivity in East Baton Rouge Parish by preserving, maintaining, and improving its parks and recreational facilities.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of its excellence, BREC has been honored with the prestigious National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) Gold Medal Award three times: in 1975, 1991, and 2022.
