About Breaking Ground

Breaking Ground is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending homelessness in New York City by providing supportive and affordable housing solutions.

Established in 1990, the organization has grown to become the nation's largest supportive housing provider, operating nearly 4,000 units across New York City, as well as in upstate New York and Connecticut.

The organization's mission is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities by developing and sustaining exceptional supportive and affordable housing, along with programs for homeless and other vulnerable New Yorkers.

Breaking Ground's approach centers on the "Housing First" model, which prioritizes providing permanent housing without preconditions or barriers to entry.

This strategy has been widely recognized as a proven and cost-effective solution to chronic homelessness.

In addition to housing, Breaking Ground offers a range of on-site support services, including recreational activities and amenities, to help residents maintain their homes and integrate into the community.

The organization also operates the "Street to Home" outreach program, which focuses on connecting individuals experiencing street homelessness with safe, secure homes.

This program has been instrumental in reducing street homelessness in targeted neighborhoods by engaging directly with those on the streets and assisting them in transitioning to permanent housing.

Breaking Ground's commitment to ending homelessness is evident in its extensive portfolio of housing developments, including notable residences such as The Times Square, The Lee, and The Schermerhorn.

These properties not only provide housing but also serve as catalysts for community revitalization, offering residents a sense of stability and belonging.

Through its comprehensive approach, Breaking Ground continues to make significant strides in addressing homelessness, offering hope and a pathway to stability for thousands of New Yorkers.
