About Boston Medical Center

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a private, not-for-profit, 514-bed academic medical center located in Boston's historic South End. As the largest safety-net hospital in New England, BMC serves as the primary teaching affiliate for the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. It offers a comprehensive range of services to meet the diverse healthcare needs of the Greater Boston community.

Comprehensive Medical Services

BMC provides a full spectrum of pediatric and adult care, including primary care, family medicine, and advanced specialty services. The hospital is renowned for its trauma and emergency services, operating the busiest Level I Trauma Center in New England. In the past year, the Emergency Department handled 133,528 visits, highlighting its critical role in the region's emergency medical response.

With over 25,840 admissions and 1,149,226 patient visits annually, BMC offers in- and outpatient clinical and diagnostic services across more than 70 medical specialties and subspecialties. These include cardiac care, neurological care, orthopedics, geriatrics, women’s health, and pediatrics, ensuring comprehensive care for a wide range of health conditions.

Community Outreach and Social Programs

BMC demonstrates an unwavering commitment to community health by serving a diverse patient population. Approximately 57% of patients come from underserved groups such as low-income and elderly individuals relying on government payors like Medicaid, the Health Safety Net, and Medicare. Additionally, 32% of patients do not speak English as a primary language, emphasizing the hospital’s dedication to Boston’s multicultural community.

The hospital extends its reach beyond traditional healthcare through various outreach programs that include:

  • Cholesterol tests
  • Blood pressure screenings
  • Osteoporosis screenings
  • Eye exams
  • Smoking cessation counseling
  • Cancer screening, education, and prevention seminars
  • Youth outreach workers trained for schools and health fairs involvement

Social programs such as the Preventive Food Pantry, the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program, and the Elders Living at Home program further demonstrate BMC’s holistic approach to health and well-being.
