About Big Lots
Big Lots Stores, Inc. is an American discount retail chain specializing in the sale of closeout and overstock merchandise. Founded in 1967 as Consolidated Stores Corporation, the company is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. It operates over 900 locations across the United States.
The company offers a wide range of products, including furniture, food, décor, and more. It aims to provide customers with friendly service, trustworthy value, and affordable solutions in every season and category.
Big Lots is committed to delivering unmatched value through surprise and delight. It focuses on building a best place to work culture, rewarding shareholders with consistent growth, and doing good as it does well.
In recent years, Big Lots faced financial challenges leading to store closures and a shift in operations. In December 2024, the company announced it would cease operations, liquidate, and close all remaining stores. Liquidation sales began then, and all stores were expected to close in 2025.
However, on December 28, 2024, Big Lots reached an agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners to transfer 200–400 stores and one or two distribution centers to Variety Wholesalers, a privately held company based in Henderson, North Carolina.
Variety Wholesalers operates over 400 retail stores in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic United States under banners such as Roses and Maxway. The acquired stores continue to operate under the Big Lots brand, retaining up to 10,000 employees.
As of July 2025, Big Lots has ceased operations in many areas, with only a limited number of locations operating under the Big Lots brand through the agreement with Variety Wholesalers. The company no longer maintains a significant presence in California, including San Francisco.
