About Bean Restaurant Group

Bean Restaurant Group is a family-owned and operated hospitality company based in Springfield, Massachusetts, with a rich history dating back to 1965. Founded by Johnny and Linda Yee, the group has grown from its original establishment, the Hu Ke Lau in Chicopee, into a diverse portfolio of 14 unique restaurants across Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The group's flagship restaurant, the Hu Ke Lau, is renowned for its Polynesian-inspired cuisine and vibrant entertainment, including concerts and comedy shows. Over the years, the Yee family has expanded their culinary offerings to include a variety of dining experiences.

In 2002, they acquired The Halfway House in South Hadley, a cozy local pub that has become a community staple. The following year, they opened Johnny's Bar & Grille in South Hadley Village Commons, serving classic American pub cuisine.

In 2011, they launched Johnny's Tavern in Amherst, offering polished casual dining under the direction of Culinary Director and Partner Chef Bryan Graham.

The group's commitment to culinary excellence is further exemplified by the revitalization of the historic Student Prince and The Fort in Springfield in 2014. This iconic German restaurant, often referred to as "The Fort" by locals, is a unique destination with deep ties to the community.

In 2018, Bean Restaurant Group expanded into Connecticut by acquiring McLadden Restaurant Group, adding three Irish pubs to their portfolio and rebranding a fourth as Union Kitchen.

Union Kitchen, located in West Hartford Center, is a chef-driven restaurant with Chef Tim East and General Manager Vishwas Badimi at the helm. The Northampton, MA, pub was rebranded as a second Wurst Haus in 2020, and the West Hartford location followed suit in 2021.

The group's dedication to community engagement is evident in their partnership with the Rondeau Family to manage The Boathouse, formerly known as Dockside. Located along the Connecticut River, The Boathouse offers classic New England fare and serves as a premier destination for full-service dining and special events.

In 2020, Bean Restaurant Group acquired White Hut in West Springfield, a local favorite since 1939. Known for its classic hamburgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes, White Hut continues to serve the community through its dine-in setting and food truck.

Bean Restaurant Group's commitment to excellence was recognized in 2024 when they were named Restaurant of the Year by the Retailers Association of Massachusetts. This award highlights their dedication to hospitality, culinary creativity, and community engagement.

With a diverse portfolio of restaurants and a strong commitment to community, Bean Restaurant Group continues to be a cornerstone of the New England dining scene.
