Atlanta History Center

The Atlanta History Center, established in 1926, is a prominent history museum and research center located in Atlanta, Georgia. Spanning 33 acres in the Buckhead neighborhood, the center offers a comprehensive exploration of Atlanta's rich history through a variety of exhibits, historic homes, gardens, and interactive programs.

At the heart of the center is the Atlanta History Museum, which features award-winning exhibitions covering topics such as the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the history of Atlanta's growth and development.

One of its most notable attractions is the Cyclorama: The Big Picture, a fully restored 132-year-old painting depicting the Battle of Atlanta. This massive artwork is displayed in a specially designed building and is one of only two cycloramas in the United States.

Historic Houses

The center includes several historic houses, including the Swan House, a 1928 mansion open to the public for tours. It was featured in the movie "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" as President Snow's mansion. Visitors can explore the rooms used during filming and learn about the Inman family's history.

Another significant site is the Smith Family Farm, a restored antebellum farm that offers a glimpse into rural life in Georgia in the mid-19th century. The farm features historic buildings, gardens, and farm animals, providing an immersive experience into the past.

Gardens and Outdoor Spaces

The center's Goizueta Gardens encompass 33 acres of gardens, wildlife trails, and woodland areas, showcasing landscapes that have shaped the city's history. The Quarry Garden features a meandering creek, marshland, stone outcroppings, and small waterfalls, all under tall trees.

Additional Site: Margaret Mitchell House

The Atlanta History Center also operates the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown Atlanta. This historic house was the residence of author Margaret Mitchell, where she wrote much of her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Gone with the Wind."

The house has been renovated and now features a reimagined exhibition titled "Telling Stories: Gone With the Wind and American Memory," exploring the book's cultural impact and its role in shaping American memory.
