About Archer
Archer Aviation Inc. is an American aerospace company specializing in the development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, commonly known as electric air taxis. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in San Jose, California, Archer aims to revolutionize urban air mobility by providing efficient, sustainable, and accessible air transportation solutions.
The company's flagship aircraft, "Midnight," is a piloted, four-passenger eVTOL designed for rapid, back-to-back flights with minimal charge time between trips. Midnight features 12 propellers—six tilt-props for both forward and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) flight, and six stationary aft propellers for VTOL-only operations.
It is engineered to travel at speeds up to 150 mph (240 km/h) with a maximum range of 100 miles (161 km). The aircraft is powered by six independent battery packs, ensuring redundancy and safety.
Archer's vision extends beyond aircraft manufacturing; the company is actively working to establish urban air mobility networks in major cities. In partnership with United Airlines, Archer plans to launch an electric air taxi route between O'Hare International Airport and Vertiport Chicago on the city's near west side.
Additionally, Archer has been named the official air taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games, aiming to transport VIPs, fans, and athletes during the events.
Partnerships and Manufacturing
In August 2022, Archer secured a significant partnership with Stellantis, a multinational automobile manufacturer, which agreed to provide up to $150 million in equity capital to support Archer's growth.
This collaboration focuses on the development and production of eVTOL aircraft for urban air mobility. Stellantis is Archer's exclusive contract manufacturer for mass production of its eVTOL aircraft.
Regulatory Milestones
Archer's commitment to innovation and safety is further illustrated by its recent achievements. In June 2024, the company received its Part 135 Air Carrier and Operator Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
This authorization allows Archer to commence commercial operations, positioning it as a leader in the emerging eVTOL industry with plans to launch air mobility networks in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago.
