About Archdiocese of Detroit
The Archdiocese of Detroit is a Roman Catholic ecclesiastical jurisdiction encompassing six counties in southeastern Michigan: Lapeer, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, and Wayne.
Established on March 8, 1833, it was elevated to an archdiocese on May 22, 1937. The archdiocese serves approximately 907,605 Catholics, representing about 20% of the region's population.
Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament
The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, located at 9844 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, serves as the mother church of the archdiocese.
This Neo-Gothic style cathedral, built in 1915, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Leadership
The archdiocese is led by Archbishop Edward Weisenburger, who succeeded Archbishop Allen Vigneron in 2025.
Archbishop Vigneron had served for 16 years before his resignation at the age of 76, in accordance with the Catholic Church's requirement for bishops to submit their resignation upon reaching 75.
Educational and Social Initiatives
The Archdiocese of Detroit is involved in various educational and social initiatives.
It operates 24 secondary schools and 62 primary schools, serving approximately 27,000 students.
The archdiocese also oversees several universities and colleges, including:
- Madonna University in Livonia
- Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit
- The University of Detroit Mercy
Its commitment to social justice is evident through support for community programs and services.
For example, the Pope Francis Center, a local non-profit focused on aiding the homeless, honors Pope Francis's progressive values and commitment to social justice.
