American University (AU) is a private, federally chartered research university located in Washington, D.C. Established in 1893, AU offers a diverse range of academic programs and services designed to foster intellectual growth, civic engagement, and global awareness.

The university comprises eight schools and colleges:

Campus
AU's main campus spans 90 acres in the Spring Valley and Tenleytown neighborhoods of Northwest D.C. The campus features a main quadrangle surrounded by academic buildings, nine residential halls, a 5,000-seat arena, and an outdoor amphitheater.
Notably, the Katzen Arts Center, a 130,000-square-foot facility, houses the university's visual and performing arts programs. It also includes the American University Museum, showcasing contemporary art from the nation's capital region and beyond.
Student Outcomes and Sustainability
In terms of student outcomes, 91% of undergraduates are employed, pursuing graduate studies, or engaged in both within six months of graduation.
AU's commitment to sustainability is evident, as it was recognized as the second "Greenest College" by Princeton Review in 2025.
