About Akron Zoo
The Akron Zoo, located just west of downtown Akron, Ohio, is a non-profit zoological park dedicated to wildlife conservation, education, and recreation. Established in 1953, the zoo spans 77 acres, with 35 acres developed into diverse animal habitats and visitor amenities.
Home to over 1,000 animals representing more than 100 species, the Akron Zoo attracts approximately 400,000 visitors annually, making it the most visited attraction in Summit County.
Exhibits and Attractions
The Akron Zoo features several themed areas that transport visitors to different parts of the world:
- Penguin Point: Opened in 2003, this exhibit houses a colony of Humboldt penguins, offering guests an up-close view of these charming birds.
- Legends of the Wild: Launched in 2005, this expansive area showcases 16 animal habitats, including species like snow leopards, jaguars, lemurs, and bats.
- Komodo Kingdom Education Center: Also opened in 2005, this center features Komodo dragons, Galápagos tortoises, and Chinese alligators, emphasizing the zoo's commitment to education and conservation.
- Curious Creatures: Introduced in 2017, this indoor exhibit highlights animals and plants with unique adaptations for survival, such as naked mole-rats, leaf-cutter ants, and electric eels.
- Wild Asia: Opened in 2021, this exhibit recreates Southeast Asian jungles and Himalayan forests, featuring Sumatran tigers, red pandas, and white-cheeked gibbons.
- Grizzly Ridge: Debuted in 2013, this 4.2-acre expansion is home to grizzly bears, bald eagles, North American river otters, and red wolves.
- Pride of Africa: Opened in 2019, this area showcases African wildlife, including lions, speke's gazelles, and white storks.
Conservation Efforts
The Akron Zoo is deeply committed to wildlife conservation, participating in various projects focused on restoration, preservation, and reintroduction. Notably, the zoo has been involved in the conservation of the Venezuelan Waterfowl Foundation, working to protect Andean river systems and the elusive torrent duck.
Additionally, the zoo has partnered with other Ohio zoos and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to create butterfly habitats, supporting a variety of resident and migrant butterfly species.
Upcoming Developments
In July 2024, the Akron Zoo announced plans to construct a new $11.95 million animal hospital, slated to open in 2026. This facility will include a state-of-the-art surgery suite, intensive care unit, and specialized spaces for various species, ensuring the highest standards of animal care.
Visitor Information
The Akron Zoo is open 361 days a year, with peak season hours from April 1 to September 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission ranges from $11 to $21 per person, with free entry for Akron Zoo members and children under two. Parking is complimentary.
