Exhibits and Attractions
The aquarium boasts a variety of exhibits showcasing the richness of aquatic life.
- Ocean Realm: Features a 550,000-gallon tank with a diverse array of sharks, including the only Great Hammerhead Shark on exhibit in the United States. Visitors can walk the 81-foot Shark Bridge, a V-shaped suspension bridge offering a thrilling view just inches above the sharks. The 40-foot Shark Tunnel provides an immersive experience with sharks swimming overhead and around guests.
- Hippo Haven: Unique to this aquarium, this exhibit houses Nile hippopotamuses, Button and Genny. Guests can observe them both above and below the water's surface through a massive glass tank.
- Penguin Park: An indoor-outdoor exhibit featuring Little Blue Penguins, the smallest penguin species in the world. The area mimics their natural habitat allowing visitors to observe their behaviors and interactions.
- Caribbean Currents: Showcases vibrant marine life of the Caribbean Sea, including tropical fish, seahorses, jellyfish, and sea turtles.
- Touch Tanks: Interactive touch tanks where visitors can engage with stingrays, horseshoe crabs, starfish, and other marine creatures guided by experts.
Special Events and Programs
The aquarium hosts various special events throughout the year, some included with admission and others requiring separate tickets or reservations.
- Mermaids Festival: Takes place each winter/early spring with real-life "mermaids" swimming among the sharks, wading with stingrays, and doing meet-and-greets on land.
- Bubble Bash: A spring break festival themed around bubbles held in late March through April. Features bubble-filled dance parties, live science demos, underwater bubble scavenger hunts for kids, and bubble-themed treats.
Conservation Efforts
The aquarium is committed to environmental stewardship and conservation. Initiatives include using recyclable cutlery and plant-based straws to reduce oceanic pollution.
It participates in breeding programs for endangered species like African penguins and supports conservation projects such as the Turgwe Hippo Trust in Zimbabwe.
