Medical Coder Duties & Responsibilities

Assign diagnostic and procedural codes to patient encounters

Conduct research and analyze data requirements for reimbursement purposes
File and process medical records systematically and accurately
Identify and rectify documentation deficiencies in medical records
Act as a subject matter expert and resource for other coding staff
Review and validate documentation related to diagnoses, procedures and treatment outcomes
Identify diagnostic and procedural information within medical records
Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify and obtain missing information
Stay informed about updates and changes in coding guidelines and regulations
Ensure compliance with coding and billing policies and procedures
Provide feedback to healthcare providers on documentation improvement opportunities
Keep abreast of advancements in medical treatments and technologies
Uphold patient confidentiality and ethical standards in all coding activities

Medical Coder Experience & Skills

Track record of successful work experience as a medical coder or in a similar role
Possess a minimum of 2+ years of hands-on experience as a medical coder
Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with relevant software and tools utilized in medical coding processes
Efficient with coding software
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Outstanding organizational skills
Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with sensitive medical information
Strong understanding of medical terminology and anatomy
Updated on the latest coding guidelines, regulations and industry standards
A keen eye for detail to identify and rectify documentation deficiencies in medical records
Strong problem-solving skills
Adaptability to evolving healthcare environments and changes in coding practices

Medical Coder Education & Qualifications

Completion of a recognized and accredited medical coding certification program
A solid foundation in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
