This Head Chef role is a full-time position based in Bronx, NY, reporting to the General Manager, offering an annual salary of $60,000 to $70,000 and typical working hours from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday with no weekend work. The position is ideal for a talented and experienced culinary professional passionate about Food Justice and making a meaningful impact in children’s lives by providing culturally familiar, nutritious meals made from scratch. The Head Chef will manage a 3-7 person team in a fast-paced school cafeteria environment serving hundreds of kids daily. This position combines culinary leadership, administrative responsibilities, and strong community engagement.
The Head Chef will be responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of the school kitchen, ensuring food safety, quality control, and recipe consistency while managing inventory and creatively planning menus to optimize food costs. Leadership is a critical component of the role, as the Head Chef will train, coach, and motivate kitchen staff to build a supportive team environment that fosters cohesion and excellent performance. The role also involves administrative duties such as adherence to production schedules, tracking consumption numbers, submitting compliance reports, and overseeing facility maintenance.
Community partnership is an integral part of the position, requiring the Head Chef to build relationships within the school by interacting with teachers, administrators, and parents, and participating in school meetings. Job Requirements
- 3+ years professional culinary experience in a fast paced, high volume kitchen
- 1+ years supervisory or management experience
- Bachelor degree in culinary arts a plus
- Demonstrated knowledge of proper food safety and sanitation practices
- Comfortable using software, apps, and spreadsheets to track and report data
- Excellent communication skills and strong organizational abilities
- Familiarity with NSLP compliance requirements a plus
- Passion for improving nutrition and health in schools
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) a plus
- ServeSafe Certificate required within 90 days of hire
