Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting and creating innovative performing arts programs that enrich, educate, and entertain diverse audiences.

Established in 1966 by Catherine Filene Shouse, who donated her 100-acre farm in Vienna, Virginia, to the U.S. government, Wolf Trap has become a unique cultural landmark.

Venues

The Foundation operates several venues within the 117-acre Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts:

  • Filene Center: A 7,000-seat indoor/outdoor venue hosting over 80 performances annually from late May to early September. It features a diverse lineup of artists across genres such as classical, pop, rock, jazz, opera, folk, and dance.
  • The Barns at Wolf Trap: An intimate 382-seat venue offering performances during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. The Barns are two 18th-century barns relocated from New England, providing a cozy setting with impeccable acoustics.
  • Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods: A small stage nestled among the trees, offering music, dance, puppetry, and storytelling performances for children.
  • Center for Education: A facility dedicated to arts education programs, including the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, which trains teachers to use arts-based tools to help children ages 0-5 improve literacy, science, math, and basic life skills.

Opera Company

Wolf Trap Foundation also operates the Wolf Trap Opera Company, a premier residency program for young opera singers. Alumni of this program can be found at top opera houses around the world.

Education and Community Engagement

In addition to performances, the Foundation is committed to arts education and community engagement. It reaches children, families, caregivers, and teachers nationwide through its acclaimed arts education programs.

The Foundation awards grants to public school educators to support theater, dance, and music projects in their classrooms.
