Job Description
Red Rabbit is a Black-owned, MWBE-certified school food management company that has been serving urban communities since its founding in 2005. Operating primarily in the North East and Mid-Atlantic regions, including the Greater New York region, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, Red Rabbit partners with hundreds of schools, districts, and food banks to deliver high-quality, culturally relevant meals to children. The company takes great pride in its mission to transform school dining by focusing not just on food but on dignity, representation, and opportunity for communities of color.
As a school food management company, Red Rabbit employs professionally trained chefs who craft menus that source farm-fresh ingredients and prepare scratch-made dishes tailored to reflect the heritage and experiences of the students they serve. This holistic approach emphasizes the importance of school food as a key part of children’s health and cultural identity. Red Rabbit’s commitment to excellence extends to its onsite and commissary kitchens, where millions of meals are prepared and served annually. Beyond delivering meals, Red Rabbit integrates itself into the school community, fostering relationships with staff and students while ensuring the highest standards of food safety and quality.
The role of In-school Prep Cook at Red Rabbit is critical to the daily success of their food operations within individual schools. This position is a full-time opportunity based in Brooklyn, New York, primarily operating from Monday to Friday with stable daytime hours from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and offers weekends, nights, and holidays off to promote a great work-life balance. Offering compensation from $16.50 to $18.50 per hour along with benefits such as health, dental, and vision insurance and paid time off, the position is designed to provide financial stability and personal well-being.
The In-school Prep Cook is part of a small team of 3-5 people responsible for preparing healthy, made-from-scratch meals for hundreds of children every school day. This role requires someone with experience in high-volume kitchen environments, whether in restaurants, commissary kitchens, or other institutional food service settings like schools or hospitals. The ideal candidate is reliable, organized, and has a "can-do" attitude, demonstrating the ability to work efficiently within a team under tight schedules while maintaining exceptional food safety and sanitation practices.
Critical tasks for this role include reading menu production sheets to understand daily food quantities and types, prioritizing menu items with the Head Chef, portioning and weighing food as per recipes, cooking and plating meals according to Red Rabbit’s standards, and distributing meals to students on schedule. The Prep Cook also plays a vital role in monitoring food production to minimize waste and maintain compliance with the Department of Health’s rigorous standards by ensuring kitchen cleanliness and proper maintenance of industrial kitchen equipment.
In addition to the technical duties, the Prep Cook represents Red Rabbit’s core values during interactions with school staff and students, promoting professionalism, helpfulness, and courtesy. This seamless integration into the school environment underscores the company’s ethos of fostering community and cultural pride. Candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish will find an added advantage, and all hires must obtain a ServeSafe certificate within 90 days with reimbursement offered.
