Job Description
Red Rabbit is a pioneering MWBE-certified K-12 school food management company founded in 2005 with a mission to transform school dining experiences for children in urban communities. The organization passionately believes that serving diverse, high-quality meals to students is about more than just food — it encompasses dignity, cultural representation, and opportunities for the youth they serve. Red Rabbit’s professionally trained chefs operate both in commissaries and onsite school cafeterias, focusing on preparing scratch-made, culturally relevant meals that genuinely reflect the heritage and lived experiences of the students. The company proudly prepares and serves millions of meals every year throughout the Greater New York region, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Washington DC, truly becoming a part of the school community rather than merely a food service provider.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to be a Prep Cook within a tightly knit team of 5 to 10 members, dedicated to preparing healthy, scratch-made meals for hundreds of children daily. The position is full-time with stable daytime hours from Sunday through Thursday, 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM, allowing for weekends and holidays off, which supports a balanced work-life schedule. With a competitive compensation ranging between $17.50 and $19.50 per hour, the role encompasses a commitment to high standards in food preparation, safety, and customer service, working under the guidance of the Head Chef.
The Prep Cook plays a vital role in a high-volume kitchen setting, contributing significantly to the daily production of nutritious meals that align with Red Rabbit’s culinary standards and Department of Health guidelines. Candidates with prior experience in fast-paced culinary environments, such as restaurants, commissary kitchens, or institutional cooking roles in schools and hospitals, will find this position well-suited to their skills. The ideal candidate must demonstrate impeccable reliability, strong organizational skills, and a positive, proactive attitude.
Key responsibilities for the Prep Cook include thorough comprehension of daily menu production sheets to accurately prepare food quantities; collaboration with the Head Chef to prioritize and execute the day’s menu items; precise portioning and weighing of ingredients following Red Rabbit’s recipes; cooking, cooling, and plating dishes consistent with strict food safety regulations; and distributing meals efficiently within set school timing and portioning guidelines. Equally important is the rigorous maintenance of kitchen cleanliness and equipment sanitation to exceed Department of Health standards consistently.
Working as part of the Red Rabbit team requires professionalism, helpfulness, and courteous interaction with school staff and students, embodying the company’s values and culture at all times. The role demands physical capability, including regularly lifting up to 50 lbs, and requires a ServeSafe Certificate attainable within 90 days of hire, with reimbursement available for certification costs. Bilingualism in English and Spanish is considered a plus, aiding communication in diverse school environments.
Overall, this Prep Cook position is an excellent fit for individuals passionate about improving child nutrition and health in schools, eager to work in a supportive and mission-driven environment, and who thrive in organized, fast-paced kitchens. Red Rabbit’s inclusive workplace offers generous paid time off, comprehensive health benefits, professional development opportunities, and a chance to make a meaningful community impact through quality school meals.
