Job Description
The YMCA of Greater New York is a longstanding community-focused organization dedicated to empowering youth, improving health, and strengthening community bonds throughout New York City. Established in 1852, the YMCA has grown into a vital resource serving more than half a million New Yorkers each year through its 24 branches located across the metropolitan area. The YMCA is committed to creating inclusive, engaging, and supportive environments where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can learn, grow, and thrive. At its core, the YMCA believes in fostering a sense of community that connects people, encourages active participation, and builds stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
The Greenpoint YMCA branch is currently seeking a dedicated Maintenance Worker/Porter to join its dynamic team. This hourly position, offering a wage of $17.78, plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall attractiveness of the facility. The Maintenance Worker/Porter will be responsible for a wide range of cleaning and maintenance tasks that ensure the branch remains a welcoming and safe environment for all members and visitors. This position supports the YMCA’s commitment to a people-first approach by providing a clean, functional space that empowers the community to engage fully with the YMCA’s programs and services.
In this role, the Maintenance Worker/Porter will undertake duties such as sanitizing floors and surfaces through mopping and dusting, managing trash removal, and maintaining recycling areas. Additional responsibilities include window washing, pool cleaning, seasonal groundskeeping such as lawn care and snow removal, and setting up meeting rooms and furniture for events. The position also involves operating various motorized and non-motorized cleaning and maintenance equipment to effectively perform assigned tasks.
The Maintenance Worker/Porter is expected to contribute to the upkeep and repair of branch equipment by conducting minor repairs and promptly reporting any major issues to supervisors. Security and safety during shifts are paramount, with responsibilities involving monitoring the building and property to identify and report any hazardous conditions or incidents. Adherence to safety and maintenance standards as outlined by the Department of Health, Department of Buildings, Fire Department of New York, Housing Preservation and Development, and Environmental Control Board is required. This ensures compliance with local regulations and maintains the YMCA’s high standards of operation.
Candidates for this role should have a high school diploma or equivalent, along with at least three years of related experience handling cleaning and maintenance with expanding responsibilities. A working knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment operation, and the safe use of cleaning chemicals is essential. Additionally, a basic understanding of light electrical work, plumbing, painting, and carpentry will be beneficial. The YMCA supports ongoing professional development and requires the Maintenance Worker/Porter to obtain the YMCA Housekeeping Certificate within the first year of employment.
This position demands flexibility, as shifts may include nights and weekends to accommodate the branch’s operational needs. The YMCA of Greater New York values employees who are committed to its mission and demonstrates a proactive attitude toward maintaining a clean and safe facility that supports a wide range of community programs. By joining the YMCA as a Maintenance Worker/Porter, individuals become part of a vibrant team focused on making a positive impact in the lives of New Yorkers across the city.
