Job Description
A private family based in New York City is seeking a skilled and health-conscious Private Chef to become an integral member of their household team. This role is unique in that it involves a seasonal transition, with the chef primarily working in New York City from September to May and moving to the Hamptons during the summer months of June, July, and August. The family occasionally requires the chef's presence throughout the year for special events and gatherings. This long-term opportunity is perfectly suited for a chef who is passionate about clean, seasonal cooking, and who values the thoughtful sourcing of ingredients with a strong focus on sustainability. The family values a farm-to-table philosophy, prioritizing fresh, organic, and locally sourced products that maintain excellent quality while being cost-aware. The ideal candidate will have a deep alignment with this way of cooking and be highly organized, proactive, and detail-oriented, especially when managing special dietary needs and food allergies.
The role involves preparing full dinners for a family of four, accommodating one child who will be leaving for college in the fall. The chef must personalize meals according to individual preferences and maintain awareness of significant dietary restrictions, including managing Celiac disease and allergies to eggs and mustard seed. Emphasis is placed on strict avoidance of gluten and cross-contamination. Beyond dinner preparation, the chef is also expected to maintain a kitchen stocked with grab-and-go healthy items such as fresh fruit, baked goods, and pre-cooked proteins. Weekly menu planning and grocery shopping with a mindful approach to cost and waste minimization fall under the chef’s responsibilities.
During the summer, the chef will primarily work from the family’s residence in the Hamptons, occasionally traveling back to New York City. Duties include preparing not only dinners but also some lunches and overseeing multiple special events and group outings that require coordination and detailed menu development. Events can range from breakfast to dinner service and may require collaboration with other household staff and temporary service members. The chef must maintain the kitchen’s cleanliness and orderliness at all times, ensuring all appliances, tools, and surfaces are pristine after meal preparation. Setting the table and providing discreet and respectful service during special events is also expected.
The family seeks a candidate who embraces a lifestyle and cooking style that reflects clean, balanced, and flavorful meals made from whole, organic, and free-range ingredients. The approach is not focused on formal fine dining every night but rather on satisfying, health-conscious family meals that are consistent with the family’s active lifestyle. Additionally, the chef should exhibit excellent organizational habits around kitchen management, show conscientious use of kitchen materials, and minimize waste. A long-term, stable commitment to this role is highly valued. The salary range is competitive, from $100,000 to $150,000 annually, with eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus. Health insurance is available after a three-month waiting period, and housing accommodations are offered during the summer months in the Hamptons if the chef prefers to stay on the property.
This opportunity is ideal for a professional chef who is not only talented in culinary arts but also values sustainability, family wellness, and the art of creating nourishing meals that support a dynamic and health-focused household.
