The Executive Chef role at Compass Group USA is a dynamic and pivotal position responsible for the comprehensive oversight of kitchen operations. Situated in the Palo Alto/San Jose area of California, this full-time opportunity comes with an attractive salary range of $110,000 to $120,000 annually. The Executive Chef will lead culinary initiatives by planning menus, managing food preparation, maintaining sanitary and safe kitchen environments, and driving compliance with corporate programs and health regulations.
This exciting role calls for an energetic and entrepreneurial culinary professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality meals and exceptional service. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning regular and modified menus in accordance with established guidelines, utilizing standardized recipes, portioning, and presentation standards to ensure consistent quality. They will oversee kitchen staff training in food preparation, food safety, operation of kitchen equipment, and sanitation standards, while fostering a culture of excellence and teamwork.
Inventory management is another critical aspect of this position, requiring the Executive Chef to maintain sufficient food and non-food supplies within established guidelines and to optimize the use of leftover food products responsibly. The role also involves establishing and maintaining cleaning and maintenance schedules to ensure a hygienic environment and compliance with local, state, and federal health and sanitation regulations, validated through audits and inspections.
The ideal candidate is expected to be highly knowledgeable about the latest food and catering trends, with a strong focus on quality, production efficiency, sanitation, cost control, and food presentation. Hands-on chef experience is essential, as is proficiency with computers and software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and Internet applications. Participation in client satisfaction programs and ongoing professional development activities forms part of the role’s core responsibilities.

Job Requirements
- must have A.S. or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of progressive culinary/kitchen management experience
- extensive catering experience is preferred
- hands-on chef experience required
- comprehensive knowledge of food and catering trends
- computer proficiency with Microsoft Office and Internet applications
- ability to comply with health and safety regulations
- must be willing to participate in client satisfaction programs
- ServSafe certification preferred
Job Qualifications
- A.S. or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of progressive culinary/kitchen management experience depending upon formal degree or training
- extensive catering experience is a plus
- high volume, complex foodservice operations experience is highly desirable
- institutional and batch cooking experience
- hands-on chef experience
- comprehensive knowledge of food and catering trends with a focus on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, and presentation
- proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, Email and the Internet
- willingness to participate in client satisfaction programs/activities
- ServSafe certified is highly desirable
Job Duties
- Plans regular and modified menus according to established guidelines
- follows standardized recipes, portioning and presentation standards
- completes and utilizes daily production worksheets and waste log sheets
- tastes completed meals to ensure quality
- trains kitchen staff in food preparation, safe handling, operation of equipment, food safety and sanitation based on Company and regulatory standards
- establishes and maintains cleaning and maintenance schedules for equipment, storage and work areas
- ensures that kitchen staff follows and completes schedules as assigned
- maintains inventory of food and non-food supplies to stay within established guidelines while assuring that necessary product is available when needed
- makes all decisions regarding utilization of leftover food products staying within Company guidelines
- complies with federal, state and local health and sanitation regulations and department sanitation procedures
- follows facility, department, and Company safety policies and procedures including occurrence reporting
- participates and attends departmental meetings, staff development, and professional programs as appropriate
