Jefferson Health serves patients through millions of encounters annually across 32 hospital campuses and over 700 outpatient and urgent care locations throughout the greater Philadelphia region, Lehigh Valley, Northeastern Pennsylvania, and southern New Jersey. Established in 1824, Thomas Jefferson University encompasses Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Jefferson College of Nursing, and the Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce, among others, offering more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programs to over 8,300 students. The organization is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate clinical care, advancing medical education, and conducting groundbreaking research. It also supports equal employment and educational opportunities for all individuals regardless of background or status.
The role of Environmental Services (EVS) Associate is essential to maintaining a safe, sanitary, and orderly environment within the hospital’s patient care areas. EVS Associates perform cleaning functions according to specific schedules and methods, ensuring that patients, visitors, and staff experience a clean and hygienic setting. This position specifically involves working the evening shift from 9 PM to 5:30 AM, with rotating weekend responsibilities. A key part of the job includes preventing cross-contamination by controlling bacteria, managing odors, and sustaining aseptic conditions, which are critical in a healthcare environment.
In addition to cleaning, EVS Associates assist with other duties such as moving furniture, delivering supplies, recycling, and trash or biohazard waste removal. They must follow stringent protocols for disposing of biohazards in compliance with EPA and OSHA regulations, including handling environmental contaminants like batteries, mercury thermometers, and needles. The role requires maintaining cleaning equipment and supplies, adhering to personal protective equipment standards to prevent exposure to infectious fluids and hazardous substances, and complying with hand hygiene policies.
Safety is paramount in this role. Associates use appropriate signage to prevent slips and falls, observe safety precautions while handling equipment, and report any mechanical or structural hazards promptly. Communication skills are also important, as EVS Associates interact with patients, visitors, and staff to ensure a courteous and respectful environment. Overall, the EVS Associate contributes significantly to the hospital’s professional appearance and infection control efforts, supporting Jefferson’s mandate to deliver exceptional patient care and maintain a healthy, safe community. The work is performed in a dynamic healthcare setting offering a supportive workplace culture with comprehensive benefits and development opportunities.
