The Cook position at Mercy Hospital St. Louis represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Nutrition Services team dedicated to producing high-quality meals for patients, visitors, and staff. This full-time, day-shift role requires an individual who possesses in-depth knowledge of various cooking methods and food preparation techniques. The successful candidate is expected to deliver visually appealing and nutritious meals that adhere strictly to approved recipes and production schedules. With a firm focus on food safety and sanitation, the Cook will play a critical role in maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient kitchen environment compliant with healthcare regulations and Mercy’s internal policies.
This role goes beyond typical cooking responsibilities by contributing directly to the healing process through the provision of well-prepared and thoughtfully presented meals. The individual must be skilled at handling multiple kitchen tasks such as chopping, slicing, grilling, steaming, reheating, and short-order cooking, all executed within defined time constraints. Attention to detail is essential, especially in maintaining portion control and presentation standards that align with Mercy’s mission of delivering exceptional patient experiences.
In this position, cooks will be entrusted with operating and maintaining various kitchen equipment, including ovens, grills, slicers, mixers, steamers, blenders, and choppers safely and efficiently. Alongside food production duties, the Cook will also be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing work areas and equipment, assisting with catering setups, and managing food inventory communications.

Job Requirements
- Ability to successfully obtain and maintain ServSafe Certification within six months of hire
- Ability to meet attendance, punctuality, and scheduling expectations
- Ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced food service environment
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and grip up to 50 pounds
- Ability to perform repetitive motions including grasping and pinching
- Ability to work around hot equipment, sharp utensils, and food preparation equipment
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred
- Ability to successfully obtain and maintain ServSafe Certification within six months of hire
- Food Handler Certification within 90 days of hire where applicable
- Knowledge of food preparation techniques and commercial kitchen operations
- Strong understanding of food safety and sanitation practices
- Basic math skills for measuring, weighing, and portioning ingredients
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Ability to follow written recipes and production instructions
- Demonstrates initiative, integrity, professionalism, and a strong work ethic
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Job Duties
- Prepare and cook food items according to approved recipes, production schedules, and quality standards
- Demonstrate proficiency in a variety of cooking techniques including chopping, slicing, grilling, steaming, reheating, and short-order cooking
- Ensure food products and displays are presented in a visually appealing and appetizing manner
- Maintain proper portion control and food presentation standards
- Accurately measure, weigh, and prepare ingredients according to established recipes
- Operate and maintain kitchen equipment safely including ovens, grills, slicers, mixers, steamers, blenders, and choppers
- Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, and food preparation surfaces according to department and regulatory standards
