Job Description

Allegro Living serves as the parent company of Allegro Management Company and Spring Arbor Management Company, bringing together decades of senior living expertise under one trusted and well-established name. Formed through the merger of two respected brands in 2025, Allegro Living is creating a premier senior living platform that focuses on delivering inspired lifestyles, compassionate care, and meaningful regional impact. This unique combination of experience and commitment places Allegro Living as a leader in the senior living industry, dedicated to improving the quality of life for its residents through thoughtful service, innovative health solutions, and a warm, welcoming community atmosphere.

Within Allegro Living, the position of Cook at Alto Grayslake is an essential role in the dining team, responsible for preparing meals that contribute significantly to the overall satisfaction and well-being of residents and guests. The Cook position is hourly paid at $18 per hour and involves a schedule from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with every other weekend being mandatory. Applicants with experience working on a cook line and in a restaurant-style service environment are preferred, though passion for preparing great meals and thriving in a fast-paced team-oriented environment are critical attributes desired for this role.

The Cook’s primary duty is to prepare food of the highest quality that delights residents and guests, ensuring that the food presentation enhances the dining experience. This includes making meals colorful, attractive, and tastefully presented to make each meal service feel like an exceptional occasion. The role also includes supervising the kitchen operations under the guidance of the Dining Services Director and the Chef or Lead Cook, ensuring that meals comply with standard recipes, budgetary costs, and company policies.

Strong emphasis is placed on maintaining cleanliness and food safety standards, with responsibilities such as supervising dishwashing, maintaining kitchen equipment, and monitoring water temperatures and chemical compounds to prevent foodborne illnesses or the spread of communicable diseases. The Cook should also engage with residents and associates in a friendly, service-oriented manner, contributing to a positive atmosphere in the community.

This role calls for a candidate who is detail-oriented, flexible, and adaptable, with excellent time management skills and a keen awareness of safety protocols. Possession of a current manager’s level food handler permit and clearance through a positive Criminal Background Screening are mandatory. Additionally, Allegro Living is proud to foster a drug-free workplace, requiring compliance with its Drug Free Workplace policy.

Preferred qualifications include at least one year of related cooking experience or an equivalent background, along with some software and computer skills, which may assist in kitchen management and ordering processes. Allegro Living emphasizes equal employment opportunities, actively prohibiting discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other protected characteristic.

Joining Allegro Living as a Cook means becoming part of a company that values inspired living and compassionate care while enjoying a supportive work environment that recognizes the importance of every associate's contribution to the community’s success.
