The role offered at Oak View Home is that of a Food Service Associate, a key position within the kitchen and dining services team. This position involves preparing various foods according to menus created by professional dieticians, specifically catering to elderly residents with dietary needs that require specialized meal preparation. The Food Service Associate is responsible for operating kitchen equipment like mixers, meat slicers, ovens, and steamers to ensure meals are prepared efficiently and safely in large institutional quantities. This role also includes maintaining strict adherence to infection control policies, keeping work areas and equipment clean, and complying with all food safety and hygiene standards.

Additionally, the Food Service Associate contributes to the smooth operation of meal service by assisting with tray line setup and service, monitoring appropriate meal portion sizes, and handling specialized diets, including therapeutic and NPO (nothing by mouth) orders. This position requires attentiveness to detail, understanding of menu substitutions, and the capability to manage diet changes swiftly and accurately. Associates may also fill in gaps in the kitchen as needed, report equipment maintenance issues, and ensure kitchen inventory is well-managed and stored properly. Handling customer interactions warmly and professionally with residents, families, and colleagues is a crucial aspect of promoting the positive image and reputation of Oak View Home.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities but requires solid communication skills, basic math proficiency, and the ability to use Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook for documentation and reporting purposes. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • experience in food preparation or kitchen work preferred
  • ability to communicate effectively with patients, family members, and colleagues
  • capability to follow infection control and safety procedures
  • physical ability to sit, walk, stand occasionally, and use hands and arms for handling kitchen tasks
  • vision abilities including close and distance vision and ability to adjust focus
  • must be able to perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks in the kitchen
  • willingness to work team-oriented shifts and fill in as needed

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Job Duties

  • Prepares various foods depending on menu created by dieticians for each meal of the day
  • operates various kitchen equipment in preparation for the meal such as mixer, meat slicer, food processor, oven, steamer
  • cleans work surfaces following shift by sweeping floors, wiping down counter space, covering and storing unused foods
  • creates meals appropriate for the elderly in large quantities using institutional-sized cookware
  • works at a constant pace to ensure food readiness for each meal
  • complies with infection control policies
  • keeps equipment clean
  • fills in gaps in kitchen help as needed
  • reports needed repairs to maintenance department
  • reads and understands menus
  • prepares meals in accordance with standardized recipes
  • assists in food service line to ensure diets are served as ordered including specialized and therapeutic diets
  • monitors and serves meals with appropriate portion controls
  • assists in processing diet changes and new diets
  • ensures meals are prepared and served on time
  • provides substitutes for those who refuse foods served
  • scrapes and washes dishes, pots, and pans
  • records freezer and walk-in refrigerator temperatures
  • checks and organizes stock
  • stores cleaning materials appropriately
  • sets up tray line and performs tray line service
  • returns trays to kitchen if requested
  • understands diet orders and follows NPO orders
  • processes diet orders and menu substitutions with records
  • properly stores leftovers and opened food
  • makes coffee and tea as requested
  • follows procedures for serving associate meals
  • cleans kitchen equipment following protocols
  • uses appropriate serving equipment
  • checks and records water temperature
  • checks dishwasher sanitizer strips and chemical levels
  • follows proper operating procedures of the steamer
  • promotes the image and reputation of the system through servant leadership and communication
  • contributes to committees, workgroups, and other project management efforts
  • performs other duties as necessary to ensure system success
